The Music Request System is a simple software set allowing users to request songs out of a live DJ's playlist. This makes it easier for the user to know whether or not their request can be played. It also allows a DJ to easily keep track of their music library.
The MRS came about in 2015 when I decided that it would be really nice to have an easy way to make sure requestees would have their songs heard. It was released to the public in 2017.
More information about the MRS is here.
More recent versions of the full-scale MRS software require at least PHP 7.0, and an as-yet-unreleased (but coming soon) future update will require at least PHP 8.0.
This isn't a huge problem as most contemporary operating systems have supported PHP 7.x at a minimum for a long time. One example is Debian: 9.0 "Stretch", which is the oldest even somewhat-supported release, shipped with PHP 7.0 by default.
However, there may be individuals who wish to run the MRS on very old hardware (re: something like a 386 or 486) whose most-suitable operating systems don't support or can't run PHP7 for some reason.
Likewise, there may be some individuals who don't want or need all of the features of the full-scale Music Request System. They just want people to be able to post song requests and that's it.
In both cases, that is what this software is for.
At a bare minimum, MRS Lite requires the following:
Any pre-requisites discovered that are not listed here should be brought to my attention.
Please be sure to read the pre-requisite section and installation notes. Report bugs if they are encountered. Also look at the changelog.
The MRS Lite software is hosted on Github. The most recent release is here.

Note that you can also choose to download the software directly from the "main" branch by clicking "Code" and "Download ZIP" on the main Github page. DO keep in mind that this is considered pre-release and unsupported software!
Please note that not all mirrors are fully up to date. Want to be listed here? Let me know. Likewise, let me know if you are listed and have recently updated or changed your mirror in any way.
There are no active mirrors at this time.
To begin, download the source code package Github page (or a mirror). Which one you choose (.zip or .tar.gz) depends on your operating system and preference.
Extract this archive using the appropriate un-archiving tool to a new folder in your "web root". This depends on your setup. There are no specific requirements for folder names in this case.
An example, under Apache on Linux, would be "/var/www/html/mrs".
When done, you should see a bunch of .php files and some other supporting files in whatever folder you have created. There is a "README.md" file that is generated by Github. This file can be deleted as it is not needed by the software. Do not delete anything else!
Next you will create the "database" directory. This should be below the web root folder, for security reasons. The web server software MUST be able to write to it. This directory MUST also be "mrs", no matter what you called the folder created when extracting the software!
Using Apache under Linux as an example again, the folder you create would be /var/www/mrs, and to make it writable either "chown www-data /var/www/mrs" or "chmod 777 /var/www/mrs"; using chown is nominally safer although still not perfectly safe.
Once this is done, open your new MRS installation in a web browser. You will be directed to the setup page, which contains further instructions. Follow these instructions.
Note that this process will write a "key" to a temporary file on your system. You need this key to proceed.
When the setup script concludes with a "SETUP COMPLETE!!!" message, you can delete both the "firstuse.txt" and "setup.php" files as they are no longer required.
Any bugs or problems encountered should be reported.
Take a backup of your existing MRS Lite installation. This includes both the database directory and the system directory.

Take a backup of your existing MRS Lite installation. This includes both the database directory and the system directory.
Extract the archive you downloaded somewhere on the system. It does not need to be inside the MRS system folder, but it can be.
Did I mention to take a backup of your existing MRS Lite installation? Please do that if you haven't done so now.
If you extracted the archive to the MRS system folder and chose to overwrite whenever prompted, you can skip this step.
If you didn't overwrite, you'll have to extract again.
If you extracted anywhere else, you can safely move all files except for the following: "README.md", "firstuse.txt", "setup.php", to the MRS system directory now.
Navigate in a web browser to <MRS URL>/upgrade.php. This will handle updating the system database to match the expectations of the newly installed software.
Once this is done, the upgrade process is complete. You can delete the "upgrade.php" file. If you extracted files outside of the MRS, you can also safely delete these.
Any bugs or problems encountered should be reported. Please be sure to make a backup before performing an upgrade.
Bug reports should be sent to mrsbugreports@gmail.com to distinguish them from regular contact requests and other emails. Be sure to include the word "bug" in the subject, or the email will never be seen.
Bug reports may also be submitted via the Stereo Dust Particles forum. Note an account on the forum is required to post.
Contact with me was formerly provided through an external form, but this option has been removed due to excessive spam. Your best bet is to contact me directly via YouTube (link is in the copyright notice below), or through email at lowendradiorequests@gmail.com.
Spam will not be responded to or looked at. Be sure to provide a meaningful and descriptive title when sending me messages! Bug reports should contain enough information that I can easily replicate the problem.
Feedback is also welcome, provided it is constructive.
