EEE PC System unit
The Asus EEE PC, introduced in 2007, was released as a response to the One Laptop Per Child initiative. They are significant in that they represent the first true "netbook", although subnotebooks were around and popular in places like Japan long before the netbook craze started.

There were several different models, ranging from the EEE PC 8G to the 2G Surf, although all of them fell under the same EEE PC 701 model number and weren't referred by these designations in all markets. The designations specified how much disk space the unit had, with "Surf" indicating that the model has integrated wi-fi hardware.
All models used the same Intel Celeron M 900 processor, and all had 512 MB of RAM although higher end models could be upgraded. They all had a 7 inch display with an 800 * 480 resolution which at the time was very low resolution but that later became the standard for small netbooks and tablets.

Although there were a few models that shipped with Windows XP, most of them ended up getting a highly customized version of Xandros Linux that was designed to make the best use of the small display size, and to make the laptop easy to learn and use.

These screenshots are taken from an EEE PC 2G Surf model.

EEE PC Internet
This is the screen you see when you first boot up.

The user interface is based on tabs and is built from scratch using Qt and Xlib. The idea here is to make the computer as easy to use as possible; keep in mind that the EEE PC was both intended for children and released in 2007, a time when a large number of users would still be getting their first computer.

Unfortunately as you might guess, most of the items here on the internet page either no longer exist or no longer work properly on this system.

EEE PC Hidden bottom bar
Screen real-estate is very limited, and Xandros knew this and configured the bottom bar to be hideable.

EEE PC Keyboard lock indicators
The EEE PC 701 did not have any keyboard lock indicators, so there are a few indicators in the notification area to serve this purpose.
